Corporate Expectations Outdated and Overruled.

I usually do not have much writing on this blog, I try and stick to visual appeal - but I have a bit of a rant, or opinion rather, that I would like to share.

I have been reading a lot of articles lately and one topic keeps coming up: Employees slacking off at work - what is realistic, what is wrong, and what is necessary.

According to Inc.com the average employee wastes 20% of their workday doing something else, whether that be daydreaming, facebooking, or doodling eyeballs on their notepad (guilty!) Of these 'lackluster' employees, the ones who wasted the most time were 20 - 29 years in age, and as employees get older, that amount of wasted time got smaller.

So what's the problem? Traditionalist corporations frustrated that they are seemingly paying you to surf the web?

Quite the contrary. If we are speaking of full-time, salaried employees - then the fact that only 2 hours of a 8 hour workday is being used to have some downtime seems like a good thing. Since the employee is not paid hourly, you want their overall, long-term performance to be high, rather than an employee paid hourly to enter data vigorously into a system.

Let's take us all back to high school for a minute, we were taught to study in spurts - 90 minutes of studying with a 20 minute break in between (or whatever ratio worked best for you). The same principle applies to employees sitting in front of a computer all day. Why would breaks benefit us? Breaks keep us from getting bored, and thus, unfocused. Being able to write a personal email, check your facebook messages, or simply read a funny article can completely recharge the brain helping you stay on task when you return to work. Without any downtime to refresh and recharge, we're less efficient, make more mistakes, and get less engaged with what we are doing, according to bufferopen.com.

Moreover, a happy worker is a productive worker. No one wants to feel like they are trapped in a box, and being examined under a microscope at all times. Employees should feel trusted. As long as they are producing quality work- they should be trusted to get it done in what ever manner, or what ever time frame best suites their lifestyle.

Here come the Millennials (Millennials are also known as Generation Y, reaching adulthood in the early 2000's). The under-30 crowd seems to be at the center for the revolutionary way of thinking -- Can you work anywhere, for however long, and still be a valued employee?

Well, Gen-Y is proving yes! Luckily, the stereotype of the 'lazy millennial' is dying down and employers are realizing - we are ready to work! We want a challenge - we want motivation! Millennials grew up a different way than any of their predecessors - we grew up multi-tasking. The younger generation is used to doing many things at once, with a lot of distractions, according to Inc.com. When we don't receive instant results - we get bored and move on to a new task. Developing systems with flexibility will be how corporations engage this new set of future leaders.

So instead of punishing your employees for the occasional daydreaming - or assuming they are not motivated due to a few Buzzfeed articles - Understand that they can do it all! Trust us until we give you a reason not to! Remember, we spend one-third of our human lives at work - shouldn't we find some way to enjoy it?

Thanks for listening.

Chilly Spring Morning

It was chilly in the morning this past Monday! I got up for work and decided I am not ready to give up my sweater and boots yet! I tried to not go too wintery by using appropriate colors for spring - yellow =) Just a casual, comfy kind of day!

I got this light-weight sweater at Express - it was in the $20 bin and had an additional 25% off! Score!

Don't forget the boots - I have worn these so much I probably owe the boots money. I got them at Target - two Thanksgivings ago! I always see some version of them in stores as soon as the weather cools down a bit. I love yellow and I can't seem to get away from it! In fact, I am sitting at work right now in a yellow cardigan!! Am I stuck in a yellow rut? I promise to expand my fashion for you all - great outfits to come (and much more season-suitable!

Office Tour!

Welcome to my Office!

After just recently getting a new job - it only took me about a week to get completely and utterly sick of the gray, bland box I was living in - therefore, I decided to spruce it up a bit! Check it out!

I purchased very few things - most of the stuff was from home - pinterest was a big inspiration on what to do and some fun creative ideas!

I love the idea of the pictures hanging on a string - like so ^ It makes it a much more casual feel and allows me to have many pictures around without a million frames bulking up my space! I have white paper clips attaching them to a fabric string - but I also saw some people using mini clothes line clips to hang there pictures which I thought was awesome - except I couldnt find them =(

I love my little @ symbol! This little guy has gone everywhere with me (job wise) since moving to NY - I also have an ampersand (&) but I like that at home - its in a good spot and I couldn't bare to move it - but be aware that I am keeping my eyes peeled for another ampersand to bring to work!

Probably my favorite part of the office is my new cactus friends and my succulent! I got them at Lowes and they were so cheap! $1-$4 bucks a pop! I got the idea from my fav blog - Glitter and Grace. (www.glitterandgrace.com)

Aren't they cute?! Also, they are perfect for the office since they dont need much sun or water =)
I got the '5' mini jar at The Christmas Tree Shoppes - great store, not enough of them around!

Gotta love my 'H' - its from Anthropologie and it was a gift from my lovely Maggie Confrey <3
This little guy is adoable - eh? He is from Kirklands. I scooped him up for $4.99 - how could I resist?

This is a joyful thing that helps me to smile every morning. I love daises, they are my favorite flower and these yellow ones are perfect for the new spring season! The jar is actually just a normal mason jar that I spray painted silver - cheap DIY!

New Job & My Office Look!

Hello All! How is everyone's week going? Mine is extra swell considering I just started a new job this week. I work for Axial Exchange - a company backed by the Mayo Clinic which provides hospitals with Patient Engagement solutions! Patient Engagement is a generally new term in the healthcare world - but its very, very important. Patient Engagement is the basic idea that healthcare should be based around the patient and providing that patient with every possible tool that they need to stay healthy! I am a new member of the sales team and I am so excited to learn more and settle in to what is turning out to be a really great company!

Today was my third day on the job and I decided to once again revert to the old neon/neutral look that I apparently cannot get enough of! Anyway - This was an easy to wear look that added some brightness to my day!

Thanks for reading and I'll see you tomorrow! For now, I am off to the dog park on this gorgeous spring (or summer!? 83 degrees?!) day!
